About the Photographer

I still wince when I hear the question, "So... what do you do?"€

I think the question is really, "Who are you?"

That, of course, is every bit as difficult to answer. People are curious about me all the time, because there are no simple boxes to place me in.

He wears deer hides. He looks Native American. Or is that Asian? He's carrying a camera. He seems to really know how to speak with computers. He speaks English really well. He seems very affectionate. He smells like smoke. How do you pronounce his name again?

I am many, many things. There is so much to see and do and learn in this world. I want to live, and expand. I want others to expand in freedom. I am as complex on the outside as everyone is on the inside, and if that's confusing, that is only because I ask you to look deeper.

If one asked, I might personally define myself as an Indigenous Mentor, Nani/Han, Activist, Photographer, Designer, Friend, Brother, and Partner.

  • When I first saw you at the airport in Kauai in your deerskin clothes, I said to myself, so that’s what a tracker looks like. The first box was not the last box. It expanded with the relationship. Tracker, nature encyclopedia, basket weaver, friend… You do what you are, man, you do what you are.

  • Thanks Ron. You, of all people, understand the complexity within those great circles that ripple outward from our lives. What we do on the surface is nothing more than an excerpt from a much greater story. ;)

  • Kerrke, Hey Bro! Glad to see you are living your dreams. Keep it simple - it allows important things to be complex. See you at Rabbitstick…if not sooner! You always have a place to stay, Patrick

  • Hmmm, one might also ask, "Where do you live?" and if the answer is BC, where in BC? I'm curious, as a Washingtonian.

  • there's this selke story in which a selke's land-bound son finds his hidden sealskin for the first time and puts it on, then says, "So this is who I really am!"
you in your deerskin make me think of that story, and it makes me wonder, when did you start wearing the deerskins, and did they lead you to a momemt of self-recognition like the selke? i've been searching for my own sealskin, knowing it's out there somewhere. when i first heard you say the words "ancestral lifeways" i swear it was like slipping into my true skin. those words have been echoing around in my head for the past five days, quite musically, crashing around in there like high tide.
so this is who I really am! it took looking at you to figure it out, Kiliii. there's a little sample of this life's perplexing magic, which of course i can't explain adequately with these words.

  • It is interesting that you feel the need to define yourself ambiguously.
